The French name hirondelle accounts for the pun of the
martlets on the arms of Arundell which are illustrated, these being the first quarter in the
shield of Lord Galway, whose surname is Monckton-Arundell. The martlet is one of
the charges used to denote the cadency of a family, and as such is the sign of a fourth
son. The eldest son succeeds to the lands of his father, and the second son to those of
his mother, and there may be land, for the third son; but as there cannot be any for a
fourth son he must take to him wings and fly elsewhere.
HERALDIC SYMBOLOGY
Meaning of Medieval Heraldic Symbols Charges and Shield Divisions
The principal element and most important part of a heraldic achievement are shields,
shields in heraldic language are called escutcheon.
Complete surface of the shield is described as field, it can be plain, it can represent
a single tincture or multiple sections of differed tinctures divided
by various lines of partition.
