It was brought to England during the Norman Conquest of 1066. Ives is a name that comes from the Norman given name<br>Ivo,<br>which contains the first element<br>iv,<br>which indicates that it is a reference to<br>yew tree<br>or one of its products such as the<br>yew bow. The surname Ives was first found in Lincolnshire.<br>Variations in spellings and usage include Ives, Ivys and others.<br>At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armor encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armor.
